Public Funded Obesity Surgery_

Canterbury District Health Board have recently commissioned Southern Obesity Surgery to develop a public funded obesity surgery program.  This program is limited in numbers and referrals are controlled by Christchurch Hospital. If you would like to be considered for public funded obesity surgery then:

• Contact your GP to be assessed for appropriateness of obesity surgery;
• Ask your GP to send a referral to Department of General Surgery, Christchurch Hospital;
• Your referral will be assessed and a General Surgery Outpatient Clinic appointment at Christchurch Hospital may be sent to you.  Here you will be consulted by an obesity surgeon;
• If selected for public funded obesity surgery you will be referred to Southern Obesity Surgery for entry into the program.

Please note that Southern Obesity Surgery does not select patients for the program. There is no advantage in contacting our offices before being assessed by Christchurch Hospital.
